A cacophony of ice and fire
So, time for catching up. As I mentioned, the car was tested a while ago by Anthony Reid and it was featured, along with some other RGB cars, in Autosport a while ago. The review was, in general, pretty favourable towards my car and the formula in general. Anthony is the chap driving the car in the photo on the right.

So, in a rush to put up even more ramblings onto the Internet, it’s time for another race report. This time from Brands where we headed a couple of weeks ago. For some time now I’ve been wanting to get my Brands lap time down to 50 seconds. The fastest last year was 51.5 seconds but that was rather deranged by a wet race 2 and only completing 200 metres of race 1.
As you can probably tell, thanks to Bryant Photography for the photo at the top of the page. As you can also tell, if you look a little harder, there seems to be a pair of pliers on the right hand side of the photo. No-one knows where these came from. I seem to have driven up the A1 several times recently, including the visit to daytuner I mentioned a while ago. However, we’re soon going to be going up there to the Croft race circuit which is just south of Darlington. I’ve been to Croft once before. For some inexplicable reason I did a track day there in 2004. God knows why because my write up of it (which you can still find here) says that we set off at 0400 which is bonkers.
I can, as a consequence, just about remember the circuit although not in any really useful way. Continue reading “Croftbound”
Keeping my cool
OK, late again, I know. All the same, let’s try and catch up, right up to the racing that happened (and also didn’t) at Brands Hatch last weekend.
We left it with me adding finishing touches like the seat covering and so on. Eventually, I pushed the car out onto the drive and took some photos, one of which is here.
So, it was finally time for the first RGB race of the season and we headed off for the delights of Brands Hatch. Last year we’d had a spectacularly wet race here, followed by a dry one the next day. This year the weather didn’t look too good for the weekend either.
Well, hardly that to be honest. Dawdling would be closer to the truth.
After Brands one of the immediately obvious issues was that the airbox had fallen apart. The top panel had been completely ripped off which is slightly alarming. I think I might have precipitated this; at some point before the Brands race I was doing something around the head restraint area and managed to nut the airbox rather firmly. Although leaving me rather dizzy I did recall an ominous cracking sound. At that point I found that the aluminium support brackets at the top of the ‘box had fatigued into two parts, which I put down to making them in 1mm sheet so I remade them with 2mm sheet. However, perhaps I fatally wounded the airbox at the same time, as well as nigh on fatally wounding me.
Boating at Brands
It was Brands time again. One of the best circuits on the calendar and a real challenge for a driver. Problem was, the weather forecast was pretty poor. I’d booked a half day testing on the Friday before the race and we went down on the Thursday evening and set up camp in the burgeoning RGB village in the middle of the outer paddock. On the Friday morning we seemed to be just about the only people there. The clouds were lowering above us threatening us with doom and despondancy.
