Putting the fire out

Back in J15 land, things are progressing albeit slowly. I must admit that I’m getting down to the scraping the barrel things here. Of course, as usual there’s lots of these.

One thing to do was to fit the various cable releases. First of all, the electrical one. I favour a good old fashioned cable job so I added an anchor for the cable outer to the side of the switch panel as you can see in the photo. I’ve also twisted the master switch around slightly so that the angle of pull works a bit better.

I’ve actually mounted the external pulls on the central tub. As this will mostly stay where it is I don’t have to faff around, as I did on the Fury, making sure that I can open the bonnet without fouling the pulls. The other external pull is, of course, for the extinguisher. I decided to mount this on top of the left hand side sidepod, as in the photo. The reason for this is that one of the problems on the Fury is that it’s difficult to carry a passenger without them standing on the extinguisher. Obviously, it’s not ideal putting it here because the weights up a bit higher. However, I reckon that it’s a sensible compromise. You can see in the photo the pipes that take the gloop to the nozzles one of which points at me, the other at the engine. The internal release for the extinguisher, the one that I pull as I’m leaping out of the cockpit, is positioned just by the side of the steering wheel. But then, paddock rumour, and my personal experience, is that the extinguisher is a device for passing scrutineering rather than something for putting out fires. Fires in racecars are extinguished by burly marshalls carrying great big red cylinders. Much the best thing to do is to stop the car near a marshall and leg it…

For a change I’ve got a couple of evenings at home this week. You never know, I might manage to do something else.
